Are you interested in seeing how much it will cost to run your air conditioner in the Greater Toronto Area.  We took some time to break down the costs associated with some different sized and efficiency air conditioners. Electricity Costs Sure the hydro companies say we have comparable electricity prices within Ontario at around 8 cents per kilowatt hour but they don’t take into account all the extras we pay on top of that. To get a true cost we have taken the most recent electrical bill here from the office added all the fees up and divided by the kWh. Your home air conditioner was probably one of your more expensive purchases and thus you want to take care if it.  Winter can be damaging to your system but removing it and storing it inside is not really an option for most home owners. We will discuss some of the ways you can protect your air conditioner as well as some of the things home owners do that can hurt your system. Winter Air Conditioner Location If your air conditioner is near a walkway, porch, or a location that has the potential to get salted for ice accretion then you are going to want to take additional action to protect your AC from salt.  The salt will speed up corrosion significantly.  I have seen home owners use skids with a tarp stapled to the outside in order to provide a sufficient salt and snow blockade. Water or ice dripping from the roof onto your air conditioner can be a serious issue.  Water expands when it freezes and can seriously damage your system.  Be proactive and ensure that the eaves troughs above are clean and debris free.  As a test you can spray the roof with a hose above your system to ensure that the troughs are not leaking and water is being diverted sufficiently. Snow drifts and blowing snow are a fact of life; if your air conditioner sits in a location that is prone to snow drifts you are going to want to protect it.  Blowing snow can penetrate right into the heart of an AC.  Try using an old skid as a snow block or your local hardware store likely has some snow fence. Winter Air Conditioner Protection An air conditioner cover is a great idea for Toronto and surrounding area homeowners.  The best types are made with a vinyl top, mesh sides, and a vinyl skirt around the bottom few inches.  The mesh allows air to flow though the air conditioner drying it out in the spring when snow is melting back into water. There could be any number of reasons why someone may want to run their AC during the winter. By winter I am suggesting the cold season being anytime from October to March here in Toronto or the GTA. For example, it could be when you are hosting the’ turkey dinner and the oven plus the burners are on along with extra family members and friends, your house can turn into a sauna.   You very well could here someone say “it’s hot in here, can you turn the AC on?”. Alternatively you may experience a lot of humidity at a point during the winter where it collects on your windows and turning on the AC would be an effective way to remove that water vapour.  Sure you may have checked the fan to ensure its not blocked up with snow, or maybe you have a cover and simply removed it so you can fire the air conditioner back up temporarily. It’s not like you can’t run your air conditioner in the winter, it more that you are running your system outside the design parameters.  All the repair techs here would strongly advise against it. Nowhere in the owners manual does it give specific instructions against running your air conditioner in the winter, but they do elude to it.  Take a look at some of the charts showing efficiency, you may quickly find the lowest temperature shown is around 60 F (15 C for Canadians).  The charts only show so far as most home owners would simply open their windows rather than running the air conditioner. On top of common sense many air conditioners are equipped with factory installed low ambient controls to prevent operation in low temperatures. In terms of harm you can cause to your air conditioner… The compressor can overheat as the oil is too think to circulate in cold temperatures, causing the unit to fail.  If this is a rental air conditioner there is a good chance the company renting to you will hold you accountable for running the system during the winter. Primarily you would simply want to open your windows to cool your home down in the winter months....

Employees responded with a number of thoughts regarding the driving factor.  While reviewing the results I couldn’t help but think that each suggestion was responsible in some form or another. Home air conditioners seem to be an irresistible target for some copper thieves these days. Unfortunately it is a common occurrence so we thought we should check out why thieves do it, and how much money they get for the crime. With one of our customers old central air systems we decided to tear it apart in search of the apparently significant copper money. In less than 10 minutes and with the help of three tools, an old but fully functional A/C can be stripped of its copper. In this case the unit is not worth anything but copper thieves frequently destroy brand new systems worth roughly $3,000 or more. When a thief steals your A/C, it is  unfortunate but the owner is stuck with the bill and the copper collected amounts to a little more than a handful, leaving A/C owners with a useless mess. The number one question – how much money do thieves get for the stolen copper? Using the copper we had legally removed from the air conditioner, we headed over to a local scrap yard and had the total haul weighed. 4.04 lbs. In order to get paid for our scrap metal they asked to photocopy valid identification, a policy required under Ontario laws. They then paid us our $12.12 @ $3 per pound of copper. Therefore a when a thief steals or destroys an air conditioner that could be worth $3,000 or more they net a total 12 dollars in scrap copper. Police told us that in most cases, those committing the crimes are just looking for a way to support a drug habit. They also mentioned that the risk of getingt caught for a misdemeanor is not the best deterrent for the crime...

How Much More Efficient Are Air Conditioners Now

This is an interesting question but it is very relevant. Is a new air conditioner that much more efficient now than an older model? If so how much more efficient are they? Central air conditioners calculate their cooling rate using something called SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) which we have talked about in depth and describes the efficiency increase in central air conditioners over time. This mea­sure of air conditioner energy effi­ciency is calculated over the cool­ing sea­son. It rep­re­sents the total cool­ing of a cen­tral air con­di­tioner dur­ing the nor­mal cool­ing sea­son as com­pared to the total electricity energy input (in Watt-Hours) con­sumed dur­ing the same period. The higher the SEER, the bet­ter the energy per­for­mance and thus the more money you save. In other words a sys­tem with a SEER of 16.00 will cost half as much to oper­ate as a sys­tem with a SEER of 8.00… Simple as that The min­i­mum SEER for new Cool­ing Sys­tems here in Ontario is 13.00, sys­tems between 5–10 years old would likely have a SEER rat­ings in the range of  10.00 to 13.00 , units over 10 years old will likely have SEER rat­ings of 7.00 to 10.00.  Now if your air conditioner is over 15 years old it will likely have SEER rat­ings of 7 or less. I went through my electrical bill the other day and worked out the actual cost of electricity here in the Greater T0ronto Area. My bill was over $65 and I only received 299 kWh for that price.  When I worked it out I am paying 22 cents per kWh with the debt retirement, taxes, delivery, and other assorted charges added on. In the summer months we can easily see an central air conditioner eat up 20, 40, 60, 100 kWh worth of electricity.  Running that system quickly becomes quite expensive.
