What is the proper way to start your Air Conditioner up after the winter?

Well there are a few steps home owners should take to ensure that their A/C runs smoothly and that this summer remains a cool one inside their house.

As always most people wait for hot weather to start their air conditioners, and of course that’s when they find out that the compressor has seized or something has broken over the winter. We recommend that you check your AC around the first or second week of May for homes in southern Ontario (maybe even a little earlier for Toronto home owners). Most companies will suggest a service call to have it examined but that really isn’t necessary as most of the work is quite simple.

Here is a list of tasks to complete before your air conditioner is summer ready.

Remove the cover on the outdoor unit and store in a safe place

Clear any plant matter or debris in and around the system

Set the outdoor switch to “ON”

Check to ensure that any A/C breakers are switched ON

Ensure humidifier bypass (if you have one) is in the CLOSED position

Turn the air conditioner on at your thermostat and let it run for about an hour

Check the vents around your home to ensure cool air is flowing

Lastly, visually check the compressor unit outside for irregular noises and any type of icing.

If your AC passes all the tests above you should be ready for the upcoming hot summer in Ontario this year.

REMEMBER If your air conditioner is over 15 years old it is inefficient and probably will need costly repairs sooner rather than later. Consider replacing it before it wears out and you can avoid a last-minute emergency replacement in a summer heat wave. This will likely net you a better deal and significantly reduce your energy bills throughout the summer – new units are much more energy efficient. You can also take advantage of Ontario Power Authority’s Heating & Cooling Incentive which gives home owners $650 back when they upgrade their furnace or air conditioner.

The heat is here much earlier than normal as we have had nearly 2 weeks of consistent above 20 degree days now. This is pretty much unheard of but if we continue this trend im afraid to see what types of temperatures we can expect for actual summer days. This year may be a good one to either upgrade your air conditioner or install one. An early purchase could be your ticket to great savings. If the summer turns out to be a scorcher and you upgrade your central air conditioner to a more efficient unit you may end up saving yourself a tidy penny. Also an early purchase can lead to a better deal as installers and HVAC companies are in a low point (spring) and thus a little more willing to negotiate to make the sale.

Toronto, the GTA and really Ontario for that matter have shattered daily high records, in fact were on pace to break the record for the most consecutive broken records! Now how is that for a precursor to summer.

There are many different models of air conditioning systems out there, make sure you do a little research to help determine which model is right for you. Also this is a good way to ensure that the salesperson isn’t taking advantage of you and your family. An A/C does need to be sized correctly otherwise you may end up with a system that is too small or too large and that can have a drastic effect on your hydro bill.

As always we do offer free consultations and A/C quotes in the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe. Contact us for more info.

In the mean time get out and enjoy the weather and a nice patio!

Toronto is in close proximity to lake Ontario, very close actually. This huge body of water adds a lot of moisture to the air. In the winter when cold water passes over the warm water in the lake it forms lake effect snow. It is slightly less visible in the summer months but as water evaporates it moisture level increases and makes hot weather feel even hotter. Weather reports sometimes include the humidex which is a temperature rating of how hot it feels outside verse how hot it actually is. What does all this have to do an air conditioner in Toronto?

Easy, Toronto’s proximity to lake Ontario add significant amounts of moisture into the surrounding air increasing the humidex rating and therefore making that home air conditioner that much more valuable.

If you question why an air conditioner is related to a humidex value then it is important to know that air conditioners both cool and dehumidify air making it comfortable and liveable in your home. Do you need an air conditioner if you live in Toronto? This is a subjective question, as it is possible to succumb to heat stroke but the chances are slim. There is no question that is certainly will make your home more comfortable and it is definitely a selling feature for any house.

A mild winter like we are experiencing here in Ontario with temperatures much warmer than normal may lead into a hot humid summer. So if you like a great deal and want to ensure a cool house during the heat wave that this summer may turn into than now is a great time look at upgrading your air conditioner. New models have been redesigned and offer great energy savings over units that are over 7 years old. Contact us and we can assess your air conditioner for efficiency and operational health and replace or install a new one at a great price.

It’s winter here in Canada, January in fact, and you wouldn’t really know it with the day we had today. If it gets any warmer people may have to think about starting up their air conditioners. It’s weird to think but at the rate were going the next piece of extinct equipment is going to be the furnace.

Whats the connection between an air conditioner and winter here in Toronto?

Well, it’s simple and air conditioner can be one of the cheapest form of heating. Some new A/C units have inverter technology installed into the new modern air conditioners. This technology allows owners to expect almost four times the amount of kw heating out of one single kw of power.

In the near future you may have an air conditioner installation as opposed to a furnace for your homes heating needs.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people that will tell you covering your air conditioner is bad for it, they are partly correct but ohh so wrong.

Water is an air conditioners Kriptonite, it starts to rust the metal and deteriorate the bearings and electric motor. A cover will not only work to deflect rain and snow but also fight condensation that can build up if improperly designed. If the cover has a plastic inside then its of low quality and will not prevent condensation. The best covers have a fibrous material that will whisk the moisture away from the unit protecting it from rust.

There are a number of places that sell good quality covers, keep your eyes open for sales and don’t forget that your air conditioner lives outside in the thick of Toronto’s elements.

Winterizing or shutting your A/C down properly for the season is an important part of extending the life of the unit. Here are the steps you should take to ensure your air conditioner is in top top shape come next summer.

Wash you A/C thoroughly with the hose, remove leaves, grass, and any dirt before covering it.

Allow the unit to completely dry and physically remove any leftover debris.

Drain any water from your window-mounted evaporation-cooler air conditioner. Evaporative coolers, cool the air by pumping water over a set of cooling pads. Any water that you leave in the cooler will freeze and can damage costly parts, so make sure to drain it well. (not very common in Canada)

Cover you air conditioner with an appropriate cover to restrict water and snow access that could rust your unit.

Secure the cover with bungee cords or ropes so that it does not shift or blow away.

Periodically check the cover during the winter to ensure that it is performing as it should.

And that is how you should winterize your air conditioner.

If you struggled through this year with a marginally efficient air conditioner, then the end of year deals happening now may be your ticket to better air conditioner.

As the A/C season nears its completion HVAC shops look to get rid of some of their inventory and bring in furnaces for the upcoming heating season. For most shops space is valuable and storing air conditioners for the winter season is not worth cost. On top of that the unit will need to be sold as “last years model” so the most economical thing to do is sell them off.

Deep discounts are usually offered and can net you between 40 and 75 percent off. Shop around and get your home a Eco friendly energy efficient home air conditioner.
