Central Air Conditioner Verses Window Air Conditioner

Central Air Conditioner Verses Window Air Conditioner

There are a number of options home owners can take when deciding how to cool their homes. Today we are going to look at the differences between a temporary air conditioner verses that of a permanently installed solution. Window and Portable Air Conditioners These systems are commonly sold in Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Walmart, etc. They range in size from around 2000 Btu to upwards of 15000 Btu. Basically there are ductless systems, window systems, and roller floor systems. Generally they are most effective when used to cool a single room in your home as there is only one output location. De-humidification One of the primary functions of any air conditioner is dehumidifying the air, this results in much cooler feeling temperatures. Window mounted systems expel the water out the back of the unit, floor standing units sometimes have reservoirs that need to be emptied. SEER Rating Power consumption is an important factor when considering an air conditioner and unfortunately these smaller sized systems are some of the most inefficient systems you can buy. In fact most window and free standing air conditioner have SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) below 10. This is equivalent to full home central air conditioners sold in the 70’s. Warranty These small systems typically have a one year warranty and realistically are not designed to last any more than 3-5 years. They are built cheaply and are sold at the same standard. Whole Home Central Air Conditioners These systems are designed to cool your entire home, they install into your furnace system and use your homes existing duct-work to spread the cool air evenly. Full home air conditioners are not commonly sold in big box stores due to the specialized knowledge and equipment needed for installation. Your best bet is to have a local contract supply and perform installation. As always we recommend homeowners receive at least three quotes before choosing a contractor. De-humidification As with all air conditioners dehumidifying the air is a big part of maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. Fully installed central air conditioners have a double walled collection plate that ensures all moisture is caught a diverted to the nearest drain. SEER Rating Whole home air conditioners are now restricted...

Your Home and Free Air Conditioning

Your Home and Free Air Conditioning

Use Your Basements Reservoir Of Cold Air Living in Ontario we all know how much it can cost for electricity every month… Well of course the electricity is cheap but the extra fees they always seem to tack on nearly triple the price.  Thus when the temperature is similar to how it is today here in Toronto it makes sense to use homes free air conditioning. To clarify the weather today is roughly 22-23 Celsius and partly cloudy.  Your central air conditioner won’t have to spend too much effort cooling your home down to that 21 degree level but it still will need to run which costs you money. How To Get (Nearly) Free Air Conditioning I have mentioned the free air conditioning thing a few times now but I should note that it will only work for homes with an unfinished basement or a larger mechanical room.  Basically your basement is like a larger less efficient geothermal system.  The cold ground surrounding the walls and floor of your basement cool the blocks or cement walls which then cools the ambient air within the basement.  In a properly built home and HVAC system when you switch your furnace fan on it should take the warm air from upstairs and deposit in the basement while taking the cool basement air and send it through the vents.  This passive cooling should be able to keep your home in the comfortable 21 degree range without even turning on the AC system. The basement is able to generate quite a bit off cooling energy but much more than a few degrees and you will need to turn your full air conditioning system on. Numbers To Back This Up Your blower on your furnace or furnace fan is roughly 400-600 watts, this a rough estimate and could be a bit higher or lower.  If you have a dual or triple stage blower than you should run it on its slowest or lowest setting to save the most energy. Your central air conditioner unit consumes anywhere from 3000 to 5000 watts… It’s not hard to see how using the cool ambient air in your basement can really save you some money.   If you have...

Record Breaking Heat In Ontario

Record Breaking Heat In Ontario

The heat is here much earlier than normal as we have had nearly 2 weeks of consistent above 20 degree days now.  This is pretty much unheard of but if we continue this trend im afraid to see what types of temperatures we can expect for actual summer days.  This year may be a good one to either upgrade your air conditioner or install one.  An early purchase could be your ticket to great savings.  If the summer turns out to be a scorcher and you upgrade your central air conditioner to a more efficient unit you may end up saving yourself a tidy penny.  Also an early purchase can lead to a better deal as installers and HVAC companies are in a low point (spring) and thus a little more willing to negotiate to make the sale.   Toronto, the GTA and really Ontario for that matter have shattered daily high records, in fact were on pace to break the record for the most consecutive broken records! Now how is that for a precursor to summer. There are many different models of air conditioning systems out there, make sure you do a little research to help determine which model is right for you.  Also this is a good way to ensure that the salesperson isn’t taking advantage of you and your family.  An A/C does need to be sized correctly otherwise you may end up with a system that is too small or too large and that can have a drastic effect on your hydro bill. As always we do offer free consultations and A/C quotes in the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe.  Contact us for more info. In the mean time get out and enjoy the weather and a nice patio!...
