Central Air Conditioner Verses Window Air Conditioner

Central Air Conditioner Verses Window Air Conditioner

There are a number of options home owners can take when deciding how to cool their homes. Today we are going to look at the differences between a temporary air conditioner verses that of a permanently installed solution. Window and Portable Air Conditioners These systems are commonly sold in Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Walmart, etc. They range in size from around 2000 Btu to upwards of 15000 Btu. Basically there are ductless systems, window systems, and roller floor systems. Generally they are most effective when used to cool a single room in your home as there is only one output location. De-humidification One of the primary functions of any air conditioner is dehumidifying the air, this results in much cooler feeling temperatures. Window mounted systems expel the water out the back of the unit, floor standing units sometimes have reservoirs that need to be emptied. SEER Rating Power consumption is an important factor when considering an air conditioner and unfortunately these smaller sized systems are some of the most inefficient systems you can buy. In fact most window and free standing air conditioner have SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) below 10. This is equivalent to full home central air conditioners sold in the 70’s. Warranty These small systems typically have a one year warranty and realistically are not designed to last any more than 3-5 years. They are built cheaply and are sold at the same standard. Whole Home Central Air Conditioners These systems are designed to cool your entire home, they install into your furnace system and use your homes existing duct-work to spread the cool air evenly. Full home air conditioners are not commonly sold in big box stores due to the specialized knowledge and equipment needed for installation. Your best bet is to have a local contract supply and perform installation. As always we recommend homeowners receive at least three quotes before choosing a contractor. De-humidification As with all air conditioners dehumidifying the air is a big part of maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. Fully installed central air conditioners have a double walled collection plate that ensures all moisture is caught a diverted to the nearest drain. SEER Rating Whole home air conditioners are now restricted...

What Is The Copper Worth In Your AC?

What Is The Copper Worth In Your AC?

Home air conditioners seem to be an irresistible target for some copper thieves these days. Unfortunately it is a common occurrence so we thought we should check out why thieves do it, and how much money they get for the crime. With one of our customers old central air systems we decided to tear it apart in search of the apparently significant copper money. In less than 10 minutes and with the help of three tools, an old but fully functional A/C can be stripped of its copper. In this case the unit is not worth anything but copper thieves frequently destroy brand new systems worth roughly $3,000 or more. When a thief steals your A/C, it is  unfortunate but the owner is stuck with the bill and the copper collected amounts to a little more than a handful, leaving A/C owners with a useless mess. The number one question – how much money do thieves get for the stolen copper? Using the copper we had legally removed from the air conditioner, we headed over to a local scrap yard and had the total haul weighed. 4.04 lbs. In order to get paid for our scrap metal they asked to photocopy valid identification, a policy required under Ontario laws. They then paid us our $12.12 @ $3 per pound of copper. Therefore a when a thief steals or destroys an air conditioner that could be worth $3,000 or more they net a total 12 dollars in scrap copper. Police told us that in most cases, those committing the crimes are just looking for a way to support a drug habit. They also mentioned that the risk of getingt caught for a misdemeanor is not the best deterrent for the crime...

Modern Air Conditioners

Modern Air Conditioners

Incredibly the air conditioner was invented in 1902 and credited to Willis Carrier, yep that’s the same name you think Carrier air conditioners.  His invention wasn’t really actually designed to cool down air either.  Like most inventions the initial discovery and subsequent product is quite different than it is today.  Mr. Carriers initial product was designed to control humidity in an industrial printing plant as the paper and ink are easily affected. Not long after, 1903 to be exact, the first air conditioner was installed to cool air and make people comfortable.  It was installed at the New York Stock Exchange, sort of a fitting place if you ask me.  The first home air conditioner wasn’t produced until 1929 and was incredibly large, heavy, and expensive.  Technology was on a role and it wasn’t even 10 years later that they had window air conditioner units available.  Of course they weren’t as portable or efficient as the systems we have today but they did the trick. Incredibly it is estimated that New York City has more than 6 million window air conditioners in use today.  Here in Toronto? Not even close to that number, we would be lucky if we topped a million.  This is due to the fact that New York has so little space that central air conditioners are a luxury most can’t afford the space for.  Toronto, we have lots of space and many single detached homes where a central air conditioner works very efficiently. With The Weather Network predicting temperatures to be slightly above normal this summer things may just be starting to heat...

The GTA Spring Air Conditioner Safety Inspection

The GTA Spring Air Conditioner Safety Inspection

Well it is official, Today is the first day of spring, and as always we start to promote the importance of air conditioner inspections and maintenance before you turn the central air in your home on for the season. This spring we want to remind homeowners about our A/C safety check special offered throughout the Greater Toronto area, this service is designed to check up on your air conditioner condition. Why In the Spring? A Home Air Conditioner safety checkup is conducted by a licensed HVAC Technician and we recommend this service once every spring.  After an air conditioner sits idle for several months during the winter, any number of problems may arise during start up or soon after.  Winter weather, salt corrosion, and debris can do serious damage to your A/C very quickly. These types of issues can lead to premature breakdowns of equipment, or create an otherwise unsafe operating environment. We Can Help An A/C preseason check up from us includes a thorough inspection of wiring, coils, refrigerant, A/C controls, condensate drains, and the air filter. Each area of inspection is meant to detect for existing damage and/or potential problems.  Should any repairs be needed, our HVAC Technician will thoroughly explain the issue and present you with available options in order to address problems before the cooling season officially begins. Part of the reason you should have a spring air conditioner inspection is to maintain efficiency.  When filters become dirty, airflow is obstructed; this forces an air conditioner to work harder when making cool air and uses more electricity. What Are the Benefits Of a Spring Air Conditioner Inspection? Keeping up routine maintenance on your air conditioner includes clearing debris, replacing air filters, and completing inspections can have many benefits. Most importantly seasonal maintenance ensures your air conditioner warranty remains valid, not only that but it also:   reduces breakdowns   lowers operating costs   extends equipment life   improves cooling efficiency   produces better indoor air quality Give us a call today to schedule your spring Air Conditioner Preseason Inspection Call:   (647) 925 1930   Or Fill Out The Form Below Contact Form Name (Required) Phone Number (Required) E-Mail Your Message Prove You're Not A Spaming...
